Because you lock in the steelbook now hoping for a price drop before release. Can always cancel later.

This will either be:

Like The Force Awakens Steelbook where the made too many and end up putting them on sale to clear out extra stock.

Or

Like the Marvel/Mad Max Steelbooks that sell out and once they are gone, they are gone for good...

I'm guessing more like The Force Awakens since the "valid only while supplies last" sticker is not able to be confirmed yet...

Wait for the next release which will include more special features. Or better yet, a 4K/3D combo (I can dream, right?)

Just checked out the other U.S. retailers and non have a plastic clam shell version of the 3D set. Han Solo quote "I got a bad feeling about this..."

We 3D U.S. based movie lovers are already treated like the redheaded-step-children even more so by Disney - you might think they would know better ya' knowWink because of the Cinderella irony and all, but they don't seem to, and they are using misleading data from their previously FAILED 3D roll-outs to justify why 3D is reasonable in Europe but somehow not in the U.S.
I have a stupid feeling like this is going to be a one off 3D offering (limited & steelbook drying up to only scalpers) and then it will only be available from Europe/U.K.
I checked and Zavvi (U.K.) of course got both a 3D steelbook & a 3D plastic clam shell version. I think your second possibility ...and then they are gone scenario in the U.S., is at least a real possibility. Wish they would publish production numbers or someone would leak something useful.

As long as it's available as a 3D somewhere in the US then I'm marginally fine with it being a retailer semi-exclusive. That assumes they don't add a simple release along the way and as long as they can be ordered online.
In-store only through somebody like Fry;s who have such a narrow store base would be nearly as bad as not having a 3D at all. . The only folks overly put upon with exclusive are the international customers who prefer (or sometimes required) to order through AmazonUS. It's easy enough to get FS from Target and BBY by adding a Store GC if needed.

With more than one retailer available at least it prevents another of the Amazon Monopoly powerplays like with Agent Carter S1, Hobbit Trilody Extended 3D boxset which took nearly 2 years to get to even a remotely decent price or went OOS before ever droppig in price (or maybe warehoused so they wouldn't have to drop the price). At least with those it was easy enough to get for 20-30% via UK, but I'm assuming the sales of teh Amazon Disney exclusives were so bad that had something to do with the apparently discontinuation of many of the newer TV seasons at all in the US (SHIELD 3, Carter 2, Jessica Jones, etc). We'll see if that follows into Once Upon a Time or it's just the Marvel sets. Castle, Grey's Anatomy, Scrubs, etc never even got started so stopping in midseries like Fox has done often isn't a good sign is Disney is abandoning TV on Bluray completely

The limited release is fine and at least at this point in time they are available (I should hope so since they just became available) but this reads to me like a Lion King 3D / Beauty and the Beast 3D US release potential situation all over again.

At least with Disney Marvel there have been the U.S. versions of the 3D movies available in the Plastic clam shell packaging once the Target "exclusive" packaging & BB Steelbook packaging sold out. But these could be a one and done scenario. It doesn't seem like a Disney behavior to continue long term with the Rogue One 3D Steelbook, and I don't see anything of a more everyday Disney 3D to replace it...

I really don't mind if that happens anymore because thanks to overseas shipping and the Amazon UK/Zavvi Disney 3D deals, which you are very excellent on providing information about, I know that the 3D will be available and likely at a far lower price eventually than here in the U.S.
But IF (i know it's early to go all FUD & Henny Penny and it's not that big of a deal given a bootleg can be gotten easily, it's just) IF they do it, it's a dick thing to do to US 3D Customers especially to those who might not jump on and be knowledgeable to decide they want to purchase it in time or be able to purchase it to say little about people years down the road.
Not everyone knows that or has enough information about region coding and that Amazon UK & even Zavvi can often be wrong about that information so it might frighten them off from buying if they don't know where to look to get the corrected information - if they even get that far.

The hope it is an alternate scenario of which there could be many, like the Rogue One... 3D Steelbook is here to stay, they have a non-steelbook version to be released at some future time (perhaps after the steelbooks sell out or around the time VIII hits theaters.

I apologize for that previous post and what started out as a sentence and morphed into something akin to Jeff Goldblum in The Fly remake. I tried to fix it so at least it's semi readable.

P.S. we talked about mine and a few others issues/problems with trying to use Disney Coupons at BB during the last S.W. T.F.A. $10 steelbook deal.

Same problem this time, register kept giving an error no matter which Disney movie I tried to check out with and of course that same D.A.M. was working and wouldn't override it.
Said the same bullshit (about it not working on them because they were on sale) only some we tried weren't. Then he pulled out the other tried and true they won't reimburse us if it falls below our cost?? vomit

Next time I go in there and the coupons are working correctly I'm going to film the checkout process so I can show him, that it works just fine one sale items. I have to have a talk with the store manager about him. He is applying Best Buy issued coupon restrictions found on many (not to apply to items on sale) and projecting that onto manufacturer's coupons.

Last two times since I had problems with both the coupon & him things have been fine and worked right at the checkouts, it's like the guy is my Disney coupon kryptonite, or Newman!, or KAHN! or some other @$$#0l3.

I'm going to assume there isn't another Best Buy within easy enough driving distance. I'd be tempted to go there and have them use the coupon then drive back by your regular store to have a sit down with the manager. I'd really suggest hitting the BestBuy Forum CSR's again and see if they can intervene and have a 3 way in person conversation to prevent future issues, but some people aren't comfortable with that level of confrontation.

With BN coupons and some of the YMMV, I've actually asked certain clerks when their shifts are since they are willing to work with me and even push the boundaries of gray areas when needed. I've learned more tricks from them than I've ever suggested to other clerks who are struggling.

I agree but based on fan sentiment on both of the recent SW movies I think the first option is more likely and these steelbooks for RO may end up under $10 after pre-orders are fulfilled
