Still? Received this on 2/22:

PayPal would like to take a moment to address an issue with your recent payment to SVM LP. Between February 8 and February 13, 2017, there was an issue that may have caused buyers purchasing a gift card from SVM to be charged a cash advance fee from their credit card company.

This issue was on PayPal's end and has been resolved. We apologize to both SVM and our mutual customers for this situation and assure you we'll credit each customer who may have been charged the cash advance fee.

Credits will be issued directly to your credit card. The credit can take up to 30 days to reflect on your credit card statement.

Thanks for your patience.

They need to have a couple good firearm sales again soon! Nothing exciting going on lately!

I guess I will bite for the good of future purchases. TU.

I have enough of a balance in PayPal to cover it without needing to go to my card, or else I would certainly be heeding your warning.

Thanks for the heads up, though!

Plus, they've also had issues with their cards getting zeroed out.

Hmmm, in the market for a handheld GPS unit for hiking, I see Cabela's has the Garmin Oregon 650T for ~$289 on sale. Three giftcards would cover that and the tax, mostly, saving me $60 in the process. Just wonder if the giftcards will get here before the sale ends.

using discounted cabelas gcs alone is simply not enough to cover their price premium. you can easily find the identical item (or a suitable substitute) elsewhere for a better price (both before and after a discount). the best way to effectively use a discounted cabelas gcs is to combine it with your points and/or use those flyers they send out (example: $20 off $150) or when you buy skus unique to cabelas (including cabelas-branded value items).

i understand the firearms purchases and the transfer fees for many people in certain states so buying firearms (at the right price) may be good for you.

Hey, just wanted to give my input since you're a fellow slickdealer. Please disregard as you please. I went through the same decision months ago. I like to go backpacking and feel like I would have a better time if I had a gps along with a map. Turns out phones make excellent GPSs now. I just got a Moto Z Play which stays on for 2 days in normal usage. I haven't gone on longer than a 3 day trip with it yet, but it has easily lasted that. I just turn off all antenna except for GPS. It even tracks everywhere I go, and I can download all the terrain maps I want for free. (Still haven't decided which gps app to pay for).

Anyways, before buying a gps, I would suggest you consider trying to use your phone as a gps unless you have a phone with a bad battery life. Saved me lots (and lots of trouble deciding which one to get) since I was gonna get a new phone anyways.

You're right that most items sold by Cabela's are much higher priced when compared to competitors, however, Cabela's-brand clothing (especially considering their large "Tall" collection) is in my experience of very high quality and excellent fit due to my tall requirements. Just thought I'd throw that out there since having properly fitted clothing is very important for comfort in outdoor activities and being uncomfortable can steer people away from that.

Another way to get a great value, especially on clothing, is waiting for perioidic seasonal clearouts (they aren't advertised - they just dump items into the bargain cave catalog). Coats, jackets, shirts, pants, shoes (esp. Cabela's brand) can be had for like 25-40% of the regular catalog price. Add a coupon & use a discounted gift card and get an even better deal.

i agree esp with the seasonal and clearance. i called it unique skus at cabelas but i clarified my original post to included cabelas-branded items which is what i meant.

I was caught in this Cash Advance issue with an SVM giftcard purchase last month as well. The biggest issue was the circular finger pointing that you get into when you try to resolve the problem.

I won't list all the details. My issue is finally resolved but wasted a significant amount of my time. SVM was my go-to source for discount giftcards but no longer.
