Does it turn off the light if I slide it all the way down or I have to hit on/off button to turn off the light.

My understanding if you will have to hit the toggle switch to turn it off, but this is by design to get around issues such as flickering bulbs when using LEDs and other issues.

man i hate Amazon does this crap now... first it's Prime only deals, then the Echo/Dot only deals. here, pay for this annual service or spend couple hundred on a piece of hardware, then you can get these deals.

yeah, yeah, i know BB does it too with GCU... still a damn annoying practice.

I'm probably biased because I have 7 different Alexa devices, but I see nothing wrong with it. There's very few deals that are actually worth it and it's just a nice bonus to having Echo devices. Plus, it's now a measly $50 for a Dot and it really is extremely useful. I use all of my devices constantly. The Dot is actually the best since it can stream to a device by Bluetooth and has an aux out. There really isn't a reason not to get it. I'd agree with the complaint if they were charging just for access to special deals or if they removed a Prime benefit unless you have Alexa but they did neither. GCU on the other hand is paying for access to deals. That's a bit different. Amazon wouldn't last very long if they gave everyone everything without needing Prime or Alexa.

I'd agree with you if Amazon didn't make their empire prior to having these Prime/Alexa only deals... back then Prime was basically paying for 2 day shipping for the year, then they added all the video/audio stuff. but now these membership only deals are getting to be a bit much.

I do agree that the introduction of the Dot, being so cheap, makes the point a bit moot... it's still a practice I'm really not fond of Smilie

Either way, it's a good price on a nice dimmer.

Have iOS? You can download an app called "Reverb" and use Alexa from your phone. I have also heard of ports to Mac OSX. I'd imagine that Android/Windows have similar ports. I'd google around if I were you.
