PSA: This 180W version might be too weak to power up the bigger laptops like XPS 15 that require a 130W adapter on their own.

"creating the ability to connect up to three FHD displays, two 4K displays, or one 5K display at 60Hz."

This is a mere minimum I'd expect from a dock nowadays, far from an overkill.

Just bought a Lenovo x1 carbon 5th Gen.

Would this be able to charge the x1 while dock is in use?

You misunderstood me. I'm not criticizing the capabilities of the dock, just that the TB bus, and therefore the price, is way overkill for what this dock does. There isn't a GPU inside it, the resolutions you quote are just being passed thru the DisplayPort channel in the TB connection, then TB is being used for the rest of the ports like Ethernet, which fits well within the bandwidth of USB 3.0. Not sure why anyone would pay upwards of 200 bucks for this thing, but you do you.

Even just passing thru requires bandwidth, doesn't it?

A regular e-dock floats around $200 msrp (much less on the secondary market of course), so this isn't that far off, given potential wider appeal beside the crowd with laptops sporting a proprietary port. Heck, the power brick alone would be $100 if you needed to get one from Dell.
I think the competing products (hp or lenovo) are priced similarly.

No argument that it's pricey, but not like there are cheaper choices that are even close to being so convenient.

Older thread I know. Just wanted to provide some updates.
1) Dell - this goes on sale down to $181. Stackable coupons.
2) Ebay / Amazon used are about $130 for the 240w version
