PSA: Staples Rebate Cards are Being Hacked

+34 Deal Score

There has been a significant increase in the number of Staples rebate cards that are being hacked. In many instances the rebate cards are being charged a few $ here and there at places like 7-11. There are also reported instances of the entire cards being drained. This is not isolated to older rebate cards. The hackers have also been draining the cards before they even are delivered.

There has been a lot of discussion regarding the issue in this thead. I wanted to create separate thread for discussion as otherwise it would likely get lost once the weekly thread expires.

Prevention:
1. Spend/ monetize your rebate cards ASAP (doesn't help if it is stolen before it is even delivered to you)

Solutions:
1. Contact Parago (rebate processor) and file a claim. They require a notarized affidavit and will still run you around in circles for over 6 months.
2. Contact Staples corporate about the issue (office of the president 1-800-338-0252)
3. Contact the BBB in your state or Staples HQ state MA.

While contacting Parago and going through their ridiculous claims process is likely the only way you will get issued a new card, the other solutions will hopefully put pressure on Staples Corporate to fix their security issue.

If anyone has any suggestions for what has worked for you, please let me know and I will add to the OP.

Nicely put together. Too bad you had to do it.

I've had 2 rebate cards hacked and for one of them have filed a fraud claim. Sent the claim certified mail which costs $3.84 and provides tracking and postage. Supposed to take 4-6 and the 6 weeks has not ended as yet. I still need to call SOOP. Some people have been compensated by SOOP.

Well, it has not impacted me yet but I'm sure it is only a matter of time.

Thanks for posting! Reps have been deposited to your account. Please see the SD cashier to trade for fabulous prizes or precious metals.

I'm not superstitious, but crossing fingers, toes, eyes, Ghostbusters plasma containment beams, no paths of black cats, knocking on wood (hard to find now), wearing my lucky Staples red shirt, rubbing on rabbit's feet, repeatedly pressing my Staples "That was easy!" button. Skipping shower and heading out in my PJ's.

Update: Annnd I got hacked. Posted about it below. Must have forgotten some lucky charm - but I'm not superstitious. Maybe that's the problem. Maybe if I truly believed. Details in a post below.

BTW this has been going on for a couple of months at least. I cash mine out ASAP, but it's a chore.

Yea, I was aware of it happening for the past few months. Just didn't seem as prevalent until recently so I created this post. I've started unloading new cards within a day or two of receiving them.

And since Amazon in the last year or so allows one to buy 3rd party gift cards with Amazon gift card balances it becomes another option to drain these cards.

Ya I got one card hacked. They charged 5 dollars to CricketWireless LLC. I wanted to press the issue but the phone number on the back of the card is totally useless. You cant reach anyone or find the fraud button. I just gave up and said it wasn't worth my time. I will start spending these card alot of faster now.

IIRC, there is an option for lost/ stolen cards? That should get you through to a person. With that said, I don't think they will do anything to compensate you unless you go through the whole claims process which is obviously not worth it for $5.

Well how about the card was used locally in MN and I live in CA? Geez. SOOP in the past (been awhile since I called them) have always been pretty nice although often times useless and clueless in following up.
