My 18mo girl is 20.5lb and 31in. So it varies. You want to switch to convertable seat around 12-15mo anyway. Parents height and weight are often a good starting point to guess. Main selling point of infant seat is to carry it around while infant sleeps which is not something you want to do with a 25lb 1-2yo who is heavy to lift and sleeps at night not in day.

I've got a little one on the way...three different vehicles will be used. Is this a good system then to use? The bases by themselves aren't cheap..almost pays to buy multiple complete sets.

That's what we did, bought 2 sets one for each car, then a third for grandparents to use. Transferring bases/seats/strollers is a pain.
