SD Blocking TOR VPN?

2,072 716 March 12, 2017 at 11:56 AM
Getting 403 error when connecting via TOR VPN. Only noticed it when using the Las Vegas server. Odd that SD would promote TOR VPN deals on the front page, then block people using the service.

I've seen other posts about VPN blocks - the "solution" was to put a rule in place to not use the VPN when connecting to SD. Other posters wisely note that the point of a VPN is exactly the opposite.

If you are having issues with spam/trolls/whatever, find a better way than inconveniencing legitimate members.

I'm having the same issue, connecting from LA & Seattle. This is extremely disappointing

Changing the city on TorGuard works for a while. I have a stealth connection. Las Vegas is no good at all now. Miami sometimes. Maybe it is catch as catch can. So I will just travel the USA via TorGuard serrver sites.

Dallas isn't working for me now. With the other issues I've had with SD - and most recently a warning about mentioning a "competitive site" - of which there is no list, partial or otherwise - I might just be leaving after almost 15 years. Of course nothing will change, except I will have less bullshit to deal with.

Hi,
I can't speak to the TOR issue.. someone from an IT perspective will need to do that..
but as to your "warning", which we do discourage discussing publicly laugh out loud Peace) you didn't get a warning, you get a friendly notice on why your thread was removed.

Correct, however the only passage in the rules that refers to "competitive sites" states:

Competitive Sites
  • You may not mention or link to competitive sites. If the site is censored, do not post that site or include them in your signature. Listing them in any context for a deal is not allowed.
So it's pretty vague, and the link to the site I posted wasn't censored. As I asked in my reply to the mod "Autumn", and to which I received no response, how am I supposed to be able to tell if it's a "competing site"?

Furthermore, the spirit of this site is "slick deals" - if I find a coupon that makes a deal "slick", but am not able to post it because it's on a "competitive site", where does that put us?

I'll be happy to discuss that one with you if you wish to PM me.

I'm having the same issue and I even have a dedicated IP from Torguard so it's just a blanket IP pool block. It's actually kind of hilarious that they would start blocking Torguard VPN mere days after having a promoted deal on the Front Page about it. I'd love for them to just unblock my dedicated IP, but I'm doubtful they'll do so. I'm using the passthrough currently, but I'm hoping they'll change their minds soon, because I don't plan on continuing to do so for very long. It's sad because like you, I've been here for a longgggg time, almost 13 years.

Same issue here with TG. Disappointing.

I'm sure there's some spam/attacks coming from the TG network. But blocking the whole network is just bad practice since SD is only a forum.

Hello,
We have actually been getting a significant influx of attacks from automated software from several different networks. Unfortunately they don't typically use a single box within each network so in order to cut the traffic we do have to block ranges.

These blocks are a temporary solution while we determine a better, less intrusive way to handle the attacks. In the meantime, feel free to send me the IP you are attempting to connect from and I can confirm that this is indeed the reason you are being blocked and we can see if there is something we can do to work around it.

Glad its only a temporary measure. Understood the VPN networks are likely high spam/attack. But a lot of them are also used just for normal web traffic.

I'm getting the same thing from various TorGuard addresses. The one address i did get to work is one that is one of the slower IP's to pick from, from my location. Has there been any change in regards to this besides sending Admin the IP you are using? Thanks
