Spirit Airlines, an ultra low cost air carrier, have "bare fares" travelling to and from New York (LGA) and Chicago (ORD) for $78. This is nonstop service.

Please note that with Spirit, your bare fare only includes air transfers and 1 small personal item (purse, small backpack). Carry ons will cost extra.

Travel availability:
Departs LGA: April 18, 19, 25, 26; May 2, 3, 6, 9, 10, 16,17
Departs ORD: April 25; May 2, 6, 11, 13, 16, 20

Use those dates and plug into Priceline [priceline.com] to book. Hurry because other sites raised it to $96 in the middle of me verifying. Priceline is still good for $78 as of now.

Wait, you're serious? Just don't come to Chicago it's okay stay wherever you are. (edit: person deleted their comment but this is what I was responding to: What is there in Chicago besides crime and liberals?)
On a side note, I've been on spirit airlines before. I took a flight a few months ago from Chicago to Denver and back. It wasn't that bad. The flight was delayed for like 45 minutes to Denver. Delayed like an hour leaving Denver. But the seats were normal, nothing too ridiculously cramped (5'8 160 lb here though). The flight was super cheap so you get what you pay for in a sense, but value wise, for me anyway, it was worth taking spirit airlines and saving something in the tune of $50 per ticket (to go and comeback) when I was looking at the next cheapest airline. Service was fine and the attendants were actually very nice.

$78 seems good to me. Going to visit family so this will be a very cheap trip. I normally travel very light, just a backpack. How strict are they with the their carry on dimensions? I should be fine, but I want to know if they'll have a tape measure out.

Go to the airport and tickets could be $50 or so lower due to their wierd fee structure, not for everyone but if booking for 4 persons ,it's not chump change.Went to Florida last year for $50 roundtrip...

I just want to mention two things:
  1. Most airlines allow for two carry-ons for free (ie bookbag + duffel bag) but Spirit only allows one free small item like a bookbag. You will have to pay extra to bring a duffel bag.
  2. Booking outside of Spirit's website means that you cannot purchase the bag until AFTER you have booked the flight. The price of the bag goes up $10 across the boardand starts at $40.

In other words, you have to fit everything in your backpack or add at least $80 to the total for a roundtrip price.

+1 to this, tickets bought at the counter don't have the convenience fee. Spirit is the Greyhound of airlines, if you accept this you'll appreciate thier service.

Just a heads up, it's cheaper to check luggage than it is to carry on and checked luggage has a maximum weight of 40 pounds. I personally don't like Spirit, but for this cheap I'm not going to cut off my nose to spite my face.

As long as you're aware of their policies, it's not bad. For longer flights, the Big Comfy Seat for $50 is well worth it. Lots of leg room.

Thanks but 1) not everyone carries luggage and 2) it's in the op about carry-on

You kidding? LGA-ORD can be had on legacy carriers for <$100 r/t, sometimes as low as $75. I fly it all the time.
