Wireless/smart switch help

uscpsycho 9,775 18,924 March 23, 2017 at 06:37 PM
I am looking for a wirelessly controlled plug in lamp switch. But I'm looking for a hybrid which I can't find.

I want one that uses both a wireless RF fob/remote (or any type of wireless control that doesn't require line-of-sight) but that can also be controlled by a mobile phone app. And preferably one that doesn't require a hub for the app to work.

Does such a creature exist?

Any zwave switch + a zwave based automation controller/hub (Samsung SmartThings 2 for example) can do this.

Why do conservative politicians oppose conservation?
Have you ever stopped to think the long-term GOP immigration policy might be to make the United States of America a less desirable place to live than Mexico?

Not sure why you would want the ability to control with a separate remote when you have your phone? Sort of redundant at that point, which is probably why you can not find such a thing. The ones with a separate RF remote are usually not wifi enabled and probably used by those without a smart phone. I would also guess that having to support two RF frequencies simultaneously would make the unit impractical cost-wise.

If you're in the Apple iPhone universe, HomeKit integration can be achieved with a $35 Raspberry Pi running the homebridge software [github.com].

I want to control with a separate remote for two reasons.

1) In many cases, having a remote control is a lot faster and easier to just click a button and turn the device on/off than have to fumble with your phone, go to an app, select the device... Imagine if every time you wanted to turn the lights in a room on/off you had to go through this process.

2) Many apps that work today will not work tomorrow. Either the company will stop supporting the app or the app won't be updated to the latest phone OS, or you might have an older phone with an OS that is too old to be compatible with the latest app version. Or new systems will come out making the existing one obsolete. Having a remote control provides a permanent way to be able to use the switch if the app is no longer serviceable.

I ended up buying a Lutron Caseta plug which does what I want but it requires a hub. Unfortunately, it can only handle 2.5amps so it's great for lamps but I can't use this for some of the things I wanted to use it for.

Insteon has a power plug that can handle higher loads but it's not as reliable as Lutron.

I am seeing some SmartThings outlets here [smartthings.com] that can handle higher amp devices which is what I want to do.

I know I'll need a hub which will allow me to control the devices with a smartphone app. But what I'm wondering is if I can turn the appliance on/off with one of these remotes, I assume I can:

https://www.smartthings.com/works...s-minimote

Seems like an obvious question but can someone please confirm?

Yes you can control a light or appliance module with a remote like this.

Light modules usually have dimmers, appliance modules have relays with either the maximum load they can handle will be in the specs. Dimming light modules shouldn't be used for non-lighting loads.

DOH!

I sure did Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)

Not anymore. Now I think I'll be best served by something that has a hub which I can control with both a phone app and zwave/zigbee/etc remote.

This "revelation" has the Liberals squealing with joy but it will be short lived (day or 2) and hopefully badly backfires with finally having arrests of OBarfBag/Clinton operatives. 7/12/17
