I don't think Freedompop has GSM hotspot yet.
Or do they??

Couldn't pull the trigger on the AT&T unlimited deal for $20/mo, this doesn't even seem like a deal at all.

Ah, I remember that one. That's where the device got sold out so quickly, almost everybody got the Global SIM hotspot. For few who got the GSM hotspot, it wasn't working so well. I don't think Freedompop offered any GSM hotspot after that fiasco.

Why not the zing at the same $19.99 price?
3G fallback is $3.99/month but only if activated. no charge otherwise.

you can decide to activate it 5min before you need it.

Better just get a hotspot capable LTE Sprint phone and go BYOD. Provided you are happy with Sprint service in your area so the extra 300MB/month is worth it over LTE sim kit.
This thing is the size of a small phone anyway.

Got one, brand new, activated already, very good and simple instruction and works very well so far in SandySpring (North atlanta). Nice little modem too, happy so far (this is my 11's Freedompop purchase and they are getting better everytime). I would also like to mention that I never got an unexpected charge on any of my many devices. (actually I did get a few bucks a few years ago for getting a warning email about my data being low, ridiculous but then removed that "service" and never had any other problems)
