Skylanders Imaginators Portal Owners Pack, From $15

I was at a local Walmart store and noticed these in the clearance section for $15. The other Walmart in the area has it for $30 and I noticed most Walmart's have it for $30 on brickseek. Online they are marked down with a price drop. I just show the cashier the online price and never had a problem with them honoring it as long as it's sold by Walmart. This comes with the game disc and a creation crystal only. It is for people who already have a portal, I believe most portals from previous Skylander games are compatible. Sorry for any inaccurate info as I am not a Skylander expert, just been looking for this game for my son. This is also my first deal post so sorry for anything I did wrong. posting.Confused

So basically $15 for the software and 1 fire crystal. It's an OK deal, but what makes it worthwhile are the figures. Thankfully I jumped on a $6 sale for most of them, and I'm glad I did because last time I checked Best Buy, Target, Walmart and TRU over the last 1-2 months, they were pretty barren of Imaginators. For all I know many of them may only be available on eBay for MSRP or worse. It seems like Imaginators has gone to an early grave and it's sad because the game isn't bad.

I need to find out what new Imaginators figures have come out in the last couple months to get them before they are OOP. I think there have been a couple.

I also assume people know that Lego Dimensions is dead too. They are going to release a few more packs but all the other future expansions will probably never happen.

Pretty much, if I like something and get into it, you can guarandamntee it will die.

Here are Brickseek links for anyone wanting to check local inventory. These appear to be around $29.99 locally at stores. Either purchase online or match price in store to get the lower price. Price matching their online price shouldn't be an issue, but local inventory will likely be. Be aware this pack includes no portal or figures beyond the single Imaginator crystal.

Xbox One - $14.62 (currently)

The portal pack is practically worthless. Yes, you can get the game, but it doesn't come with any Sensei Skylanders. I guess you could play the game without them, but there's a lot you wouldn't be able to do. And you could get different senseis, but then you'd still have to buy them. I'm sure the regular starter pack could be found cheap as well to make it worth the while. When they came out with the starter pack, it was a special promotion release for Black Friday. Unfortunately, you could pay $5-$10 on Black Friday and get the full starter pack, so it was kind of a joke. I'm really not sure why they released this set. I guess the difference between the $30 regular price and the $75 regular price of the starter pack made it worth it, but since the regular starter pack goes on sale quite a bit, I doubt Walmart sold many of these.

Grave Clobber and Pain-yatta have come out in the last couple of months, as well as a couple of Easter variants. There was supposed to be an adventure pack released, but no one has seen it in the US, and no word on when it's coming. Rumor was that there was flooding where the main distribution center is located, so that could be the issue. Skylanders did announce they weren't releasing a new game, but would continue to release new content for Imaginators. I'm pretty sure that just means what's already been announced. I think stores have given up on the game. I've seen the new ones at Target. I haven't looked anywhere else, as we just haven't had the money to go out and buy them. My son's mostly into the crystals anyway, so he can make his own Skylanders (btw, dark crystals are supposed to be out, but I haven't seen them). That's what really makes the game fun. It's probably one of the best in the series, and sadly not getting much support because the lack of inventory for Trap Team and Superchargers being a dud ruined Skylanders, so there hasn't been as much interest.

As for Lego Dimensions, I really wish it wasn't true. I really thought the game was doing well. TT/WB Games won't say anything, and as far as it looks aren't even saying anything to their employees. But they have moved developers to other projects and are just being quiet about the game, and it looks like development on year 3 has come to a halt. Lots of people are trying to say that's a bunch of lies and attacking the person who reported it, but they have reliable sources. Plus the social media (who normally posts once a day and responds quickly) went quite for a couple of weeks, then when they came back were promoting wave 7.5 (after starting their promotion of wave 8 in March) more, then almost quietly changed the date of wave 8 to May with one post that confused everyone. Most thought it was a mistake, but they kept commenting May 9 when people would ask. The rest of the released have been pushed well into the summer (no release date, yet, but rumor is they'll be stretched out until September) when they normally would be pushing the next year's worth of content at E3 and other conventions. They don't even look ready to do that. Could they just be putting Lego Dimensions on the back burner and not actually ending it? Possibly, but it's not likely. The toys-to-life genre is practically dead. Infinity ended, then Skylanders. Lego Dimensions was the only one still alive (if you don't count Amiibos, which doesn't seem to be getting much of a push especially with the Switch). I think they just saw the writing on the wall for toys-to-life and decided to start focusing on other games like Lego Worlds and apparently some other Lego games to be released in the future. They put all their focus on Lego Dimensions over the last couple of years, and weren't really developing new Lego games, but instead putting them in LD. So maybe they realized it was better to shift their focus.

Sad but true, our family got into Disney Infinity buying virtually every figure and power disc available. For Skylanders we have bought each of the games, but now just buy the base games and a few figures here and there on sale. The Best Buy sale near Christmas on Supercharger figures/vehicles was amazing and helped us get nearly half of the figures and vehicles available for that iteration. Of the current figures Kaos, Sheep Mage, and a few others stand out as well as the level packs, but I'll be waiting for future sales.

As always, thanks for being one of the cool helpful guys here. Yes, Grave Clobber and Pain-yatta are the 2 I need now that you mention them. I typically don't buy the variants of the same character, so for instance on Chopscotch (?) I got whichever one was on sale and ignored the other (Candy Coated). I don't think they are dramatically different in the gameplay. I didn't realize dark crystals weren't out yet. I only saw them on eBay for $50+, so I said I'd probably never get any. If I can get them for $6 or less I'd grab a bunch. Out of curiosity, how many of each crystal type did you buy (I mean each element) for you and your son? I think I got 3-4 of each when the crystals were $5 or $5.20 each. That's still a fair bit of money. If they get cheaper I could get more.

I'll keep my eye out for dark crystals, but considering I still haven't seen any fire crystals in stores, I'm not holding out hope. Fortunately I got fire crystals for $5 each from GS.com. Do you think I can wait a while for a B1G1 50% off Target deal on Grave Clobber and Pain-yatta or should I hurry before they are OOP?

I probably read the same article you did on Lego Dimensions. It's totally believable it's on the back burner which means don't expect anything new. I thought I read they did an update which is taking away a lot of those "worlds" on the second island in space. It seems there is a devoted fanbase (like us) who buy all of these, but for whatever reason each company overproduces or sets its expectations too high and then abandons the game when they don't meet sales figures. In a way, it feels like "toys to life" has a similarity to 3D Blurays. Most people don't like 3D and think they are too expensive, yet the 3D fans are willing to pay double a normal Bluray for a 3D one and to choose 3D over 4K for the same price. I've never understood why these companies can't market 3D or toys to life to the loyal fanbase in a more limited amount. Almost how Warner does MOD (Manufacture on Demand) for some movies, too bad they couldn't offer more reasonable prices and let people get on a pre-purchase waiting list so they could keep developing and make just the right amount to avoid clearance blowouts and losses. Based on past history, I could say that I would buy every starter pack for $35 on release and every figure for $6 each. It would be like Columbia House used to be... sign up for a subscription unless you cancel. Instead of that business model, they want $75 for a starter pack and $15 for each figure and produce too many or not enough, and then they get mad and abandon the games which we liked. No matter what their price is, my past history is pretty close to $30-$35 for every starter pack and $6 for every figure within 3-6 months of release. Then when they go on clearance I buy starter packs for other platforms.

Like I said, whenever I like something, it dies. I'm bad luck. Anyway, nice hearing from you again.

Did you buy other sets early on or managed to get them on clearance? I typically didn't want long enough and got the majority of my stuff for $6. Early on I stupidly paid $8 per Infinity figure, but I moved it down to $6 and then $5. I already owned them all when they were down in the $1-$2 range. I felt stupid for not waiting, but other times when I've waited the items went OOP and then cost 2-3x MSRP on eBay. So it's hard to know when to buy. In the grand scheme of things and losses in life, spending a couple hundred for a starter kit and 20 figures isn't going to break me.

Regardless, I liked all of the 3 major toys to life. The only Skylanders I didn't like as much were the first 2 where you couldn't jump, but even they were still fun.

I've typically paid on average around $6 - 8 per figure. I have had Best Buy GCU since collecting so I have always had at least 20% off. It seemed near release there would also be a sale I was able to price match, often from Best Buy themselves where my GCU discount made the cost even lower than the sale price. For power discs I bought a lot when they went on sale at ToysRUS, including when they were $0.25 per pack for the 1.0 power discs. With DI 3.0 I preordered and got the ToyBox Takeover for free and then Best Buy ended up having a sale day one of B2G1 that I used with my GCU discount.

I decided not to wait on many figures because of the DI 1.0 outages, but with 2.0 and 3.0 there weren't outages (except during sales). We've put in enough time into the game on multiple platforms that spending a few hundred on each game wasn't really a big deal either.

We started collecting with Disney Infinity, but then went on to Skylanders, LEGO Dimensions and even Nintendo Amiibo. Disney Infinity and amiibo are the only toys to life figures I have bought early on. Skylanders we started into when it was in the Swap Force era and I bought a lot of the figures early, but then with Trap Team I paced myself and waited for more sales.

I had bought Imaginators to go with the Nintendo Switch using a credit we had. But as that version of the game doesn't include all of the content (racing stages) owning it on another console for a reduced cost makes sense to get the full experience. The Switch version allows us to use the Nintendo only characters as well as store characters digitally and play them on the go. Owning the PS4 version through this portal pack means we already have the sensei's so being able to play this at full graphical fidelity on PS4 with figures at home for only $15 is great. That said we already have Trap Team and Supercharger portals that work for Sony and Nintendo platforms universally so we are good there.

There seem to be a few upset buyers on Walmart's comment section for this pack that weren't aware the Xbox One and 360 versions of Skylanders have always required their own non-universal portals. So anyone buying this deal, be aware you can't use an existing portal from a Microsoft console on a Nintendo/Sony one or vice versa.

We only bought one crystal per element. I think we might have ended up with an extra of one or two of them (mainly due to Christmas gifts, if so). We haven't had much money to invest in it. My son likes creating new characters all the time, but we figured out a way to reset the crystals (using a 3DS and the original Spyro's Adventure game). It's kind of a bummer to see all his work get reset, but he hasn't done it much since the beginning. He normally uses the app to design Skylanders and get an idea of what he wants to create, then he would create the Skylander when he gets the crystal. At least they let you change everything else outside the class. So he can completely change the design of the Skylander if he wants.

As for waiting on sales, it's anyone's guess. To be honest, I haven't bought much, lately. We mainly counted on Christmas gifts and used some of my son's Christmas money. His birthday is coming up, soon, so we might look into buying more, but I'm not sure. But I haven't really seen much new until I saw Grave Clobber and Pain-yatta at Target, the other day. I don't get to go to TRU as much, anymore, since we've moved to the other side of town, but I didn't see much of the new stuff when I was there, the other day. I have read about complaints of the Tiki Adventure Pack not being released in the US, but they've been released in other countries. But people are also reporting that there was lots of flooding near where the US distribution center is, so that may have been a cause. Activision will never say anything, just like they didn't when port strikes kept Trap Team products from getting to the stores. Skylanders wasn't the same after that, as many stores never saw that stock (which included some of the more sought after characters), and stores didn't order more stock of the later waves. After Superchargers failed to connect with fans, stores just stopped ordering much stock (the last wave of Superchargers never made it to stores in the US). So now people are concerned that it's going to happen, again. But we may never know. Some of the characters my son really wanted were supposed to be in the final waves (Pain-yatta and Ro-Bow).

This is the only really good reason to have the portal pack, and I'm glad it worked for you. But it's few and far between of people buying the same game for another console, especially since they didn't release a 3DS game. The Switch was a good reason, though, but not too many people have them, yet. It might also be good for anyone who had the game on PS3 and wanted to upgrade to PS4, but that's it. You can't even upgrade from XBox 360 to XBox One. Not only can you not use the same portal between Microsoft and Sony systems, you can't even use the same portal on the XB360 and XB1. Microsoft is very particular about proprietary usage on accessories on their consoles. We're using XBox 360, so if we wanted to get it on another system, we'd have to buy the entire starter pack, and not the portal owner's pack.

The Gamestop near me had the Starter Pack for this in the clearance bin for $10. I am not sure if that was a YMMV situation or not, but they only had 3 sets, and one was opened and resealed.

Thanks, I had forgotten about the 360 and Xbox One using different portals. So yeah this portal owners pack works best for two specific uses which are nitch markets. Namely upgrading from other consoles you already have the Imaginators Starter Pack on, or switching from consoles you already owned the Starter Pack on. This kit basically allows you to own the game on Wii U, Xbox One, Switch, PS4, or PS3, and then upgrade or switch to another platform (specifically Xbox One, PS4, or Wii U). The third option wouldnt be recommended to get the full experience and that is owning one of the past two entries on the same console and then just using your existing figures to play Imaginators. Sure you can buy your own Sensei figures, but playing without them at all wouldn't be ideal.

"We only bought one crystal per element. So he can completely change the design of the Skylander if he wants."

Any chance you could direct me to information about this? My son is getting into the game now and would really like to redo a couple crystals- Thanks

Does that last one work on any console? I know people were saying it worked on Wii, but I didn't hear about it working on any other console.

Edit: If you read the comments on that video, they confirm that it's only the Wii version.
