Completely agree. The reason I raise these points is because many here think automatics are a better watch in general for everyone, when they really are a nitche watch as you say.

Is 21mm is some kind of odd/uncommon size? Haven't had a lot of luck finding a short 21mm leather strap.

You can opt for a nato strap to replace the leather one. Most nato straps can accommodate wrists as small as 6.0 inches. Or if you prefer leather straps, look into getting a short strap replacement....

These come with nice straps, unfortunately they are way to big for my wrist. Does anyone have any advice for people with small wrists?

Absolutely true. However, if it's your only watch and you wear it at least every other day, you'll never have to wind it and it could last for (again, theoretically) a 100 years. There's also the...

The word "good" was your word. That's the word you chose. There is nothing unique about a mass produced cheap automatic movement. If you were talking about a watch with in-house movement, so rare...

Unlike a quartz watch, you could throw an automatic in the drawer and three days later have to reset it. Automatics are fine if you wear the same one every day. Having to reset a watch each time I...

Lots of interesting opinions around Autos. I have quite a few (Longines, Alpina, Hamilton along with a Certina DS Podium Chrono Auto). It's really about if the design/art/complication of a watch...

The target audience is slightly different I would say. It's not about what's "good" but what's unique in an automatic/mechanical watches. I've never owned one but I'm fascinated by mechanical watches...

Less accurate than quartz. Less dependable than quartz. Service costs are way more than a battery change for quartz. Bulkier and weighs more than quartz. What is the good in an automatic?

I'd kindly disagree. My local watchsmith can service the standard ETA for less than $100. Sure, from a percentage standpoint, it is a big chunk. But it would get the watch going. The poster may just...

3-5 years shouldn't be a problem for ETA movements without service.

Thanks for the reply, in that case, how long should I be expecting something like this watch (or any other budget auto) to last? 3 years? 5 years?

It's not worth servicing this particular watch nor any budget automatic. You will end up paying more for the service than the watch itself. Just use it until it dies or learn to service it yourself.

how often do automatic watch(es) need to be serviced? and what the costs? Trying to figure out if getting an automatic to add to the collection or just continue to get battery powered watches.
