The issue with ryzen specifically in games is not the adoption of multi cores in games, but the lower IPC. If Ryzen had a higher IPC than kaby lake it would have performed better in games regardless...

Same here. I have a 970 with mine and it still holds up with modern titles at 21:9 1080p. The 4790k will still be more than adequate for a while - most games only use ~35-50% with my GPU maxed. ...
