The issue with ryzen specifically in games is not the adoption of multi cores in games, but the lower IPC. If Ryzen had a higher IPC than kaby lake it would have performed better in games regardless...

You have to figure that up until now 4 core was main stream. New consoles have 8 core cpus. Ryzen and now Intel both have 6 core mainstream cpus and decent prices.

Same here. I have a 970 with mine and it still holds up with modern titles at 21:9 1080p. The 4790k will still be more than adequate for a while - most games only use ~35-50% with my GPU maxed.
