No, a sharpening rod is different than a honing rod. If you have narrow stones (like 1/2") that comes with the jig, you can use it as a substitute for rod.

If you follow the instructions, you wont round the tip. I have over 50 knives, not 1 has a rounded tip after many sharpenings each. Just make sure when you are pulling back, the tip doesnt get 1/2...
