Also in some cases, phones that are locked to AT&T will actually work on AT&T MVNOs without doing anything. Depends on the carrier, phone, and sim card.

That would mean that you have to use an AT&T prepaid/ GoPhone for 6 months before you could ask them to unlock it for use on other MVNO's like Cricket (which is actually owned by AT&T) or TracFone...

I don't see any reason they would. Check HowardForums. You may be able to buy an unlock code on ebay.
