It is powered by wiring it into your car, the battery is a backup battery so that if you wire it to a switchable source it will be able to record for a period of time without power. I have no idea...

I have one of these and I really like it, paid a lot more than this for it. This is a really good deal at $125.00. This is a front and rear camera, not just the front....
