If you watch blu-rays, your losing some sound quality over the optical. If your just watching OTA or built-in streaming apps then not really losing anything.

My Samsung TV only outputs stereo sound over it's optical out cable. It advertises 5.1, but that is only supported if you use the TV's built in apps. Yuck! Make sure your TV supports pulling 5.1...
