I tried holding it down with gloves and a shop towel but the dang thing flings off. Might be cause of the weak lithium battery that came with the kit.

Maybe you should try holding the pulley? Wrap a rubber bungee cord, bicycle tube, etc around it for grip. They're generally not very tight...
