usually i've heard you should start the mixer on slow and then speed it up if you're doing that. another solution i saw the other day was covering the opening with a towel. simple enough.

Do you have preference on bowl lift vs tilt head? Pro is also much heavier and sits taller on the counter. Also - much more powerful motor but you have to determine if you need that much power.

I like it for large batches of bread dough. Tweaking a large batch with a bit extra flour can send flour flying over the bowl until it gets incorporated.

I think bowl-lift stand mixer are better. On other hand, I bought Farberware stand mixer when it was on sale in walmart for $50. I am happy with that mixer. It got more power that KitcheAid mixers.
