It will if you setup ARC (Audio Return Channel) in the setup (as long as your TV supports ARC). You can also use the optical out on your TV to the Receiver as an option though...not any sense...

Honestly never tried that. I imagine it would work due to hdmi arc (audio return channel) as long as your tv supported arc. You wouldn't fry the receiver if it didnt work. You just wouldn't hear...
