The others are right you don't need this much performance, but it sure is nice not to have to replace your modem every couple years. To me its worth it to pay a bit more for future proofing

You don’t have to. Buy new. When it arrives return on old purchase. Amazon doesn’t track serial numbers. Can basically return as “new”. Don’t need to lie and say doesn’t work or anything.
