I have the older 64gb models. If you are using them in a vertical hub, they are not suitable due to their design. It is too thick You basically lose a slot for each one.

Ah ok, because small files can trip up cheap controllers. Perhaps the port was under powered? Some drives are finicky with that as well, either way, not great to be sure.
