Billy Sheehan changes them after every gig, so he says. However, I don't know ANYONE else that beats up a bass as much as he does in a show, haha! I change them when I feel like they aren't as bright...

Idk, you might be fretting too hard if you regularly wear divots into your strings (or frets, for that matter)

When the frets have worn tiny divots on the back of the strings, it's time to change them.
Otherwise, once or twice a year is fine for the bedroom bassist.

I think it's done by anybody who is really particular about the sound of their strings. I absolutely loathe the sound of dead strings.
And I tried flatwounds once about fifteen years ago. Once. To...

Fuggin money bags over here. Every other gig is kinda crazy and only done by pros who don't have to pay for strings.
Use flatwound strings and you'll never have to change them :)

To chime in here, remember that nickel will never be as bright as stainless steel, so these aren't super zingy if you're worried about that. I personally way prefer the SS ones on my jazz basses...

It is pretty subjective. For me, once they feel rubbery. I find new strings to be too zingy and I need a couple of weeks to break them in back to where I like them.
