I second joshwill's suggestion of the 50mm f1.8. However, lens quality isn't the only thing that might be affecting your sharpness. Shake and high ISO usually have a bigger impact than lens quality....

If you don't need to be able to zoom then buy a good quality prime lens of an appropriate focal length. Image quality is virtually guaranteed to be sharper than what you're getting with a zoom....

You could try extension tubes....a decent set last i knew was about $150. I have dabbled with them, and with a prime lens you could focus on a flea on the tit of a titmouse.
