It felt like they were expecting to end the story at a particular point, then were told to extend it, then a season cut off the timeline so having to condense again.

True - but I'll say the commercials are infrequent and short. There's ~4 breaks of 20-30 seconds per episode.

Agreed. I can't imagine a single soul being glad they chose SD over HD at the same price, but then again people will pay $15 for a dvd when the blu/dvd/digital combo pack is $5
