40 gram 3m insulation is not that warm. I usually grab my pair made for fishing with windproof fabric and fleece lining. As long as you find a pair that's fleece lined you are golden

For normal use, yes.. fingerless thumb would be cold.
I have some cheapy ones where the thumb is fingerless. Good for texting. But yes, they get cold outside.

These are great gloves/mittens. Not to mention the warmest pair that I have ever worn. I absolutely use them for snow blowing and anything else outside. They are not water proof so not good for kids...
