Read the release notes on the firmware, it will say what's been changed. It depends if they were able to do so without any hardware changes or not and if it was worth the time in making the changes...

I don't think it makes any real difference you have it for free I think I may have the same as a 2nd backup router.

Curious, friend gave me an old Belkin ac750 router that uses 802.11ac (draft 2.0) https://www.belkin.com/my/p/P-F9K1116/ Does a firmware upgrade to the latest version change it to the final draft...
