It provides a lot of heat, but unfortunately, that heat is directed more upward, than outward. So if you're close to it, it'll feel very toasty, but the further back you sit, you won't feel it too...

from what i read, yes that's why you want the stand. The bottom get very hot and it's not good for wood or trex. on concrete, or stone patio, probably not as much of a need.
