I own this very same drive and bought it at $60-70 for my AMD 3700X rig I built back in 2019. And I got another similar LG drive I purchased way back in 2011 at $100 for an Intel 980X rig which is...

thanks a lot for the info! really interesting and i agree quite vexing for manufacturers to do that vs just having a different model number for drives that work with UHD. It doesn't affect me now but...

Correct. My understanding is that it is not possible to make older drives work with UHD discs at all. This model number is listed as a "UHD Friendly" drive, which means it would never play UHD discs...

you mean it won't play UHD discs? even without a firmware update? I don't use my PC in my home theater so it's never come up. and i'm not interested in ripping discs.

It might be the same model number, but that unfortunately doesn't make it the same drive...you can't do anything with UHD discs unless it was manufactured after 2015, per all the instructions on the...

I don't use a burner for 4k. 90GB per movie is just way too much storage space on hard drives. 20-30GB per Bluray is bad enough. I just purchase the 4k Film with the Digital Code. The trouble now is...

Thanks man. It was nice of you to go through the trouble. Yeah, I figured that out with some help from their forum. You need the SDFtool and the WH16NS60 1.02MK firmware. And since these drives come...

this is funny, i decided to look into what my drive is and see if this is an upgrade, and **i bought the exact same drive, from newegg, in 2012 for $55 with a 10 pack of BDRs thrown in for free** ...

If 4K UHD discs yes that's what I was getting with this drive, haven't tried just a blu-ray disc yet.

It may actually be the disks. It seems it is not at all tolerant to minor scratches. I am also getting a maximum of 5.7x (24.5MB/s) reading speeds. That sounds about right?

Historically LG drives have been very very reliable but you can try your hand at LiteOn, Plextor, or ASUS are the other players. If indeed yours is actually failing I'd say it's a fluke and just...

What were you expecting? Examples of sites where you can download UHD rips? I'm not about to discuss piracy on Slickdeals.

Ordered one. Gonna sign up for a gamefly movie only subscription since Redbox in my area does not have 4k discs.
