Oxidation of the oil is the biggest factor to changing it's viscosity. On an already not sludged engine, normal OCI's are not going to be changed in a major way due to combustion by-product.

I just remember an independent study a couple of guys did using a Camaro and through donations. They went 11k miles on Amsoil before the oil got so heavy that it was affecting fuel mileage.

Cleaners pull and hold combustion byproducts in the oil. The more you have the less drops out. This causes the oil weight to go up.
