Perhaps he uses the Discover card points to redeem as statement credit or cashback. In that case, it's "cheaper" to buy from Costco b/c of the maths.

I don't have a Costco membership, and even if I did, I'd have to pay for the GCs with out of pocket funds, not rewards. Also, the only GCs I ever see offered at 20% off on Discover are of absolutely...

Costco has it frequently for 20% off. Not worth it to waste valuable discover points on this. My 2 cents.
