try changing your display resolution to 1280x720 before connecting to your tv. and as suggested before close the lid on the laptop before connecting to the tv.

try doing dual view. or setting to tv only. You can do something like fn+f8 or go in to the video card settings. Do you have an ati or nvidia or intel video card? and what version of windows?

Press and hold Fn and press F8 at the same time.
That will cycle video modes on your dell. IF you keep pressing it you will go from clone, to external display, to standard.

what mode are you setting the video card, clone/dual view? Can you try putting the video to just the tv? Does that work? I bet its a resulation issue, one might be 6:9 and the other 6:10 ratio...
