Looks like he is saying it only happened once.... Once you beat the game the first time it allows you to run through it a second time using Luigi.

Yeah, I think the 80% one is pretty close to what they actually have, I think I'll have to decide. They may just play a different game. I wonder if there is there a way to load two games on?

From the short amount of research I've Googled, it doesn't seem there's any way to recover your data. I'd advise backing up your saves to a SD card every so often (or very often) in the future.
