14 vs 12...all the homes in our track are 14 to switch/light runs, and the 12 for the outlets...

Maybe you should describe to the OP how he will determine what size wire is being used and how he will know if there is room on the circuit, according to the code in his area.

so the out come is..
check how much is on the circuit and what size
if it has room add the outlet
if any1 complains, call it a convenience receptacle per NEC

Check the code book. Your area has a code for what is allowed on one circuit. Simple. If you vary from the code, and add extra things to a circuit or breaker, you run the risk of overloading it...

as I said..... 14g is usually for lighting and 12g for sockets. A key to this is probably also that lights are often used with 3w switches, so that extra wire would really add up if you were using...
