There are various reasons for the error you are getting. but here's a solution from a MSC troubleshooting website that worked for several people with the same problem as yours.

This worked perfectly! For those of us who don't have a cd/dvd drive, system image restores have to be done either from a thumb drive or other mountable/bootable medium.

You can if you pull the drive before starting the actual restore process. The environment is loaded into RAM by that point and the drive is no longer needed. The recovery environment will recognize...

You CANNOT do an Image recovery from a thumb drive (it messes up the drive assignments)... use a recovery CD/system disk
