As for 3-4 drives not really the configs in DLNA (if you go that route) should make it pretty seamless.

Rpi can do .mkv (via xbmc), but not full 1080p (it stutters slightly), but it probably could if you bought the mpeg license and encoded your videos to use it

You can install XBMC on Rasp. Pi and do 1080p playback(not sure what "large 1080p" means) but you have to purchase license key for MPEG-2 playback (direct DVD rips).
