Actually the light was turning on in that case. The light comes on for photos too.

once a virus or malware is public, companies update their definitions to detect it. i don't buy the fact it is undetectable. maybe at first but it doesn't last forever.

You are right about hard wiring it (and they should do it). I do remember reading that malware is able to turn on the cam with out turning on the light.

I currently use software like that. It's not terribly great, but it's simple. Basically the webcams are always on and it only saves the video if it detects motion.
