True, but the small button behind the wheel can be adjusted to be the middle click. It's actually much easier to press than the wheel, despite it's seemingly awkward location.

I had this problem originally until I discovered I can make the middle button operate like the middle click. it's been pretty perfect with that easy fix.

I have a Performance MX, and there is a button behind the scroll wheel to disable the clicking effect so you can just spin these for seconds. It is quite dramatic but hard to control precisely.
