The enclosure and the amp on the sub that comes with this set looks identical to the SW-8. The driver is probably different, but I'm not sure how much better the SW-8 can be.

no, my meaning was you could get the 5.0 system and buy your sub separately if you like.
the Pioneer SW8 is a better replacement than the sub that comes with the 5.1 system

Decent speakers for small satellites. Sub, not so hot at this price point. If you have room for bookshelf speakers, watch NE for the R series Polk to go on sale and get the Pioneer SW8 sub for $70 ....

Sears does not carry this model with the sub woofer. It is just the 5 speakers. Incorrect model to compare.

if you're looking for the 5.0, Crutchfield has it for $200. Sears has it for $150, but they won't ship. In-store only and good luck trying to find a store with it.

Amazing speakers, mediocre subwoofer (quite decent for the price though). For those who want a better sub, wait until the 5.0 system goes on sale for $200, happens quite often.

Subwoofer is powered. Love this system. Newegg has been lowering to this price every month or so for a few days. Amazon will often match it and then it jumps back up to $399 a few days later.
