I think it is designing issue. Many people complains about same thing "HDMI handshake issue" cross all Onkyo TX-NR series product. (Google it). but I did not see anyone complains ARC muting sound...

I did updated , the HDMI not sync with my PBO player, the small HDMI sign on the display flashing awhile eventually went out, same issue for my Samsung 3D BD player, it only worked with my SONY BD...
