It is legit, that is how they all do it. I paid a $150 deposit on an OBDII scanner because I needed to use it off-site. I brought it back and they refunded me $150. I could have bought one for $40,...

It's a legit deal. If you don't return it, it's paid for. It you break it, it's yours and you can't return it because it's broken and they WON'T take it back.... And yes, they will check it when...

This is AFAIK 100% on the up and up. You are probably just getting lucky as far as getting new tools: ordinarily the tools you get are beat up and used: which is fine, the rental is free! The...

I would actually feel more comfortable with the scenario that you describe. But in my case, the tools are brand-new in sealed boxes. Not used. That is what bugs me. Now I suppose it could be because...

If you think about it, it does make sense. They "sell" you a used tool, which you use and return. This way if you break it, or don't return it, they're not out any $$. At least it's (net) free to...

Do you have one of their competitors nearby, so you can see if their setup seems any better? I can hit Advance, Autozone, and O'Reilly all within 1/4 mile of each other

Weird, but cool. Nothing along the lines of what I have received. Maybe you have a store that just opened, so they do not have any sets that have been used yet...?

I have done this at autozone before, but it was not "buying" at all, nor was it out of the box. I asked for a tool rental and they had a deposit for it and the deposit was nothing close to the price...

No he took me behind the counter to see the sets. They are all brand-new ball joint removal sets in factory sealed boxes. For $150 I could get a much better set (OTC). These are pretty much cheap...

haha, I don't know a ton about Autozone, but those stories are funny...but none have to deal with a shady company or tool rental. Link 1 is some dude bitching that Autozone doesn't warranty...

I think the salesman did you wrong when he said they "sell" you the tools. Don't think you are going to get a brand new set of tools in brand new packaging. You will get a kit that they have made...

^^this. The tools are far from new. They are great tools, but just have been around the block since everyone borrows them.

borrow + deposit is not the same as buy + return. Borrowing implies you understand the tool might be used. Buy/return implies the product will be put back on retail sale as new.

Yeah, they let you borrow them for free and just take a deposit in case you intentionally destroy the tools. I think autozone used to only do it if you bought the replacement part from them that...

So it isn't renting really, it is borrowing? I have no issue with this in concept as long as they are cool with it. But this is a ball joint removal kit. I lot of forces go on it and it will show...

No its not fishy. Autozone does it too. Its just a deposit so if you don't return the tool they aren't screwed. Borrowed tons of tools this way without issue from autozone.

If you want to rent a tool, find an actual tool rental place. That does indeed sound fishy.

It certainly does sound fishy, as it defies logic and if it's not logical, then something is wrong in the deal. Using the following search terms in Google, brought up these first 4 results. 1 2...
