Um, unless you're talking about a 120-150W pico psu, typical 500W power supplies are less efficient when talking about loads less than 100W Here's a graph of various 300W-450W power supply...

Typically PSUs are more efficient at low loads, not less. But any PSU that's only $20 is probably not a platinum plus efficiency killer.

It doesn't take into account the $20 480W power supply, which is probably around 60% efficient at that low of a load. At the plug, we are talking about 60W or so.
