my local walmart has the 2pc shelf kit on clearance for $3, its actually "firewood brackets" but looks to be the exact same as the shelf kit pieces. Something to look for if you need extra pieces

one other advantage to building your own is u can customize it. i needed a workbench for a miter saw to cut long pieces of trim 8', 12' which are very "flimsy" and don't lay flat like a 2x4 does.

the only size that's set is the height because of the legs in the kit. You can make the length and width whatever you want within reason. The shelf spacing is also completely up to the way you want...

agreed, i am also tall and i made my workbench at a slightly elevated height so that is is more comfortable for me (no slouching / bending over)
