Just curious as I also wanted to setup surveillance using synology; So you end up buying 6 additional camera license? wouldn't that be more expensive than buying a DVR/NVR system with 8 cameras?

I have the DS 411+ which has been awesome. You just leave it on all day and it's like having your own accessible cloud. It's pretty nice data security

I have 7 surveillance cameras and images have to be written fairly fast. I think RAID-5 had disadvantage in writing and reading is good, whereas RAID-10 has writing advantage.

RAID5 is a disaster waiting to happen. Resilvering is all but guaranteed to fail. You are way better off with RAID1, 6 or 10. 10 is really the best, but yields the least usable storage and requires...

RAID-5
This is perhaps the most useful RAID mode when one wishes to combine a larger number of physical disks, and still maintain some redundancy. RAID-5 can be used on three or more disks, with...

you can still setup RAID 5 with 4 hard drives. the additional hard drive just becomes more storage for the complete RAID array.

The Blue Blink of Death occurred on models released quite a while ago, and this has been resolved. It's a non-issue now. I have the 1812+ running raid 6 with WD Red drives.

Yep, you need a managed switch on top of the NAS to get link aggregation. I was excited about it until I found at, as you mentioned, that it doesn't increase the speed to 1 computer for transferring...

Yup this is correct. Raid5 just requires 3 disks minimum where 1 drive is a parity drive. And Synology has their own modified Raid5 system (SHR) that works even better in my mind because you can mix...

I don't think this is correct either. For raid5, all you need is a minimum of 3 disks. He has 4 2TB disks, so he'll lose the usable capacity of one drive. (N-1) * size of smallest drive.
