I was there. I spoke to the woman who did it. They applied the full 250 to the phone. The target mobile rep even told me if I was buying a second phone he could do it with the first gift card.

They weren't applying it to the installment plan, they were applying it to the upfront cost of the upgrade (i.e. the sales tax).
I think it's best if you just confine your future phone...
