I agree the synology OS is great and very versatile. What about just building your own synology NAS using Xpenology for a fraction of the cost? Time wise and difficulty it doesn't seem that hard.

be aware if u decide to go with Synology. there are several models such as DS1815+ or DS1515+ and 12 bay ones.... those are not designed with SATA3 6G but mixed with slow SATA 1 1.5G interface....
