I share a similar testament. I use to use linksys/Cisco until they sold. Now I'm all about asus routers
I flashed the router with dd-wrt and it solved most of my problems.

Also had bad experience with this router. Was limiting my 150mbps Comcast connection to 15mbps, where my 3 year old tplink would do 50mbps on wifi and 120+ wired anywhere in my house. Spend hours...

Owned a WRT1900AC refurbished unit for about a year now and haven't experienced any issues at all. I do turn the router off every night.
Still $224 around me.
