Don't forget that in California (and other states) there's a $.05 charge per bottle for CRV. So tack on $2 per a 40 bottle case, making it $4.99 for 5.28 gallons (40*16.9).
For convenience though...

this is a great deal if you don't have to sign up for bottle delivery
I can refill 5 gallon bottles for $1.50 at windmill stations, not sure if they have them everywhere

I pay about a penny a gallon from my tap. Add a Brita if it tastes funny. For 99% of American's there is no point (unless you have bad well water or live in Detroit)

Agreed. Minus the convenience, the 40 16.9 oz kirkland bottles is a much better deal.
BTW it seems like they upped their price on rental, I pay $1/month for the cooler.
