Invest in a weber bullet and chimney starter. Two loads of bricks from starter and my smoker maintains temp for at least 12 hours.

$85 in my area with two left.
However, these are not good smokers (temp is too high for many things and little flow control), and it seems to basically be a big BBQ with less direct heat.
