*EDIT: The Genie doesn't allow the basic option, unless you call and convince them, they charged me $20 for the change.*

Is there a monthly fee with Ooma Telo?
With a one-time purchase of Ooma Telo, you can start making unlimited calls in the U.S. for free with the Ooma Basic Plan. There's no monthly contract or long-term commitment to start using your Ooma home phone service. For just $9.99/month you can upgrade to Ooma Premier and enjoy an additional suite of advanced features like an instant second line and call blocking.
While your service is free with the Basic plan, all Ooma customers are required to pay monthly taxes and fees. Why? Like other telecommunications companies, Ooma is subject to laws and regulations under the city, county, state, province and federal levels.
As a result, Ooma charges applicable taxes and fees so that the company can comply with laws and regulations mandated by the government:
Regulatory compliance fee
911 service fee
Federal universal service charge (U.S. customers only)
State or province and local taxes, fees and surcharges
To get an idea of how much you would pay each month at your location, use our tax calculator.

Ooma basic service is not free anymore? I guess I am grandfathered in at free+tax and fees for about $6 a month.

Edit: Based on the above post, there is still basic service for free.

The taxes and fees are about $8/month at this point, so I wouldn't consider it free, especially given that a chunk of those fees are really just a way for Ooma to make some money.

Ooma basic is still free but you have to pay the state taxes and fees (about $6 in my area).

The Ooma genie in this deal is locked to the premium service, which is $10+taxes and fees per month. Genie doesn't allow downgrading to the basic plan. You need the Telo for basic.

Thanks. I didn't know they have a device locked to premium service.

I didn't realize the Genie required the premium plan, I thought the basic was available. Thanks for clarifying. My house got struck by lightning and now my ObiTalk won't turn on. I thought this would be a comparable replacement. So much for my free landline.

EDIT: I called to cancel service and planned to return the device. They offered to change the plan to basic for a $20 fee, so I accepted.

I planned to get the renewed Ooma Telo for $50 on Amazon, this saved me a few steps.
